How to Sign a PDF Without Adobe Acrobat

Adobe Acrobat is powerful, but many people only need to sign one document and be done with it. For that kind of task, a lighter browser-based signing tool is usually enough.

There are several ways to add your signature to a PDF for free, and they work on any device without installing anything.

The difference: typed, drawn, and certified signatures

  • Typed signature - your name in a signature-style font, or a text annotation. Fast and accepted by most employers and landlords for routine documents.
  • Drawn signature - you draw with a mouse, trackpad, or finger on a touchscreen. Looks more like a real signature. Still an image annotation, not a cryptographic signature.
  • Certified / digital signature - backed by a certificate authority. Required for legal contracts in some jurisdictions and for government filings. Needs a qualified e-signature provider (DocuSign, Adobe Sign, etc.).

For everyday use - internal forms, acknowledgments, cover letters, rental applications - a drawn or typed signature is commonly accepted. Some contracts and government processes still require a certified or qualified e-signature.

  • If the signature line is small, zoom in on the page before placing the signature block so you get the positioning right.
  • After signing, open the downloaded PDF and try to click on the signature. If it is not selectable as editable text, the signature has been correctly flattened into the document.

For most everyday documents - employment forms, rental agreements, internal approvals - yes. A drawn signature shows intent to sign and is generally treated the same as a handwritten wet signature.
